Prime Minister praises Wakefield
A TRIP to Downing Street was a day to remember for a Wakefield duo who are determined to keep youngsters off the streets.
40-year-old Jahangir Khan, who founded the Sahara Youth Centre on Chald Lane, attended a 'community heroes' reception at Britain's best-known address last Thursday.
He was chosen to attend the event by Wakefield MP Mary Creagh. They got to mingle with other community heroes before being introduced to the prime minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah.
Mr Khan, community liaison officer at Kettlethorpe High School, became the city's first Asian youth worker 20 years ago. He said: "It was the biggest day of my life and a dream come true. I would like to thank Ms Creagh for the opportunity.
"I want to help young people take full advantage of learning, employment and cultural opportunities by raising their aspiration, self-confidence and attainment. I am over the moon this has been recognised by my local MP and the PM."
Sahara, which means 'support' in Urdu, was founded in 2004 for young people aged between 11 and 19 to help keep them off the streets and put youngsters who have been excluded from school back on the right track.
